The Timber Wolf
Wildlife Series:
The forth installment in the Wildlife series is a portrait painting of the Timber Wolf. A curious, playful member of the canine family, the wolf is happiest when a member of a pack. Branded as vermine by many people, as a manacing predator, as evil, the poor wolf is now near to extinction. Efforts to reintroduce the Timber Wolf into provincial and state parks is currently under way but it will be some time before these efforts are successful. I wanted to portray the more dog-like personality of the wolf as having a curious and playfull nature which many of us tend to overlook.
This work is done in the fine detailed pen&ink pointillism or stipple technique. I view the portraits as paintings instead of drawings. There is far more effort and detail involved, and I class the drawings as the works leading up to the design of the original.
The attempt here with the detail is in the texture and colouration or shading of the fur coat.
